Farm Truck Foods Starts Rolling Today

Farm Truck Foods, a rolling food truck that brings farm-raised produce and local food products to underserved communities, is officially in business today.

Farm Truck Foods works with dozens of local farms and purveyors to purchase produce, eggs, meat, breads, honey, and other small-batch food products (like Caffe d’Amore coffee, fresh pasta from Ohio City Pasta, and baked goods from BreadWorks), and resell them in communities throughout Pittsburgh – think of it as a rolling Farmer’s Market.

The truck will work closely with Edible Earth Farm from Tionesta, PA, which will be providing organic vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well as other area farms, like Wholesome Valley Farm in Ohio and Pittsburgher Highland Farm, for pasture-raised meat, cage-free eggs and pasture-raised diary.

The idea for Farm Truck Foods comes from Michelle Lagree, Meredith Neel-Jurinko, and Landon DePaulo, three Pittsburgh-area graduate students who have been working on the project for more than two years.

Though they’re launching at the peak of the local produce season, the truck will roll on throughout the year.

“We’ll be open year round, though our produce line will shift as the growing season changes,” said Neel-Jurinko.

The Farm Truck Foods truck will be making stops Monday through Friday throughout the area.

• 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at York Commons, 4003 Penn Avenue, Lawrenceville
• 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Homewood-Brushton YMCA, 7140 Bennett St., Homewood

Tuesday

•  4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Daily Mart, 1125 Arlington Avenue, Allentown

Wednesday

• 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Element Church, 205 North Avenue, Millvale

Thursday

• 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 4812 Second Avenue, Hazelwood
• 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Avenue, Larimer

Friday

• 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Crafton Plaza, at 35 East Crafton Avenue, Crafton
• 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. behind Eat’n Park at 301 Chartiers Avenue, McKees Rocks

Weekend hours will be on the schedule once they’re up and running – and, stay tuned for even more locations to be announced. Neel-Jurinko says that by the end of August, they’re hoping to have more than 15 stops in rotation.
