Good Food Pittsburgh Radio Episode 1: “Holly Juice has to stay.”

December 5, 2017 by Emily Catalano 2 Comments

In today’s episode of Good Food Pittsburgh Radio (our very first one!), Madeline and I talk all about what new restaurants to put on your radar in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh-specific holiday gift ideas that you can ship just about anywhere, and our favorite holiday food traditions.

Part 1

11 New Pittsburgh Food Spots To Put On Your Radar: We share our favorites from the list, and what you should keep an eye out for in the coming months, including:

  • Madeleine Bakery
  • Federal Galley
  • Piazza Talarico
  • Driftwood Oven

Part 2

19 Pittsburgh Food Gifts That Ship Nationwide: What Pittsburgh food gift would you love to send someone? For me, it’s got to be an Iron Born pizza… how can we get this done?

  • Goldbely has lots of different ship-able food products from all over the country (including Primanti Brother’s sandwiches).

Part 3

Madeline and I talk about some very specific holiday offerings on our family table every year, including Sandwich Spread (this recipe isn’t exactly right, but if you add some pimentos, it’s close), Seven Layer Salad, and the Quigley family’s Christmas-morning Holly Juice. We want to know: What family dish is a must-have on your holiday table, even if no one else knows what it is?

Part 4

What are the best things we ate this week? Here’s a hint:

  • Wise County Biscuits
  • Bar Frenchman

And finally, a little something on why you should order every dessert on the menu.

Thanks for listening! We can’t wait to hear what you think – send us emails and questions at [email protected].

Hi Emily! I did get the pingback on my Ground Bologna Sandwich Spread post when you linked to it here. I’d never had it with pimentos as one of the ingredients, does your version have a different name? Here in Michigan we use primarily German bologna, which has a different flavor profile than the Pennsylvania Dutch bolognas. But really, it’s all good, I’ve enjoyed quite a few different variations over the years. Thanks for the mention!

Hi Dave! Thank you SO much for writing, and for letting us share your great recipe! We’ve only ever called it ‘Sandwich Spread’ in our house, and have always used Pennsylvania Dutch bologna. I think that the pimentos were added when my grandmother somewhere along the way to give it a little extra kick. It’s always a fun recipe to bring out!

      Thanks again,
      Emily
