12 Healthy Pittsburgh Dishes That Don’t Sacrifice Flavor

Most people entered 2018 with good eating intentions.

But, in city like Pittsburgh, sometimes it can be hard to stick to a diet. With new restaurants and breweries opening every week, and traditionalists insisting we put fries our our sandwiches (and salads!), temptation is everywhere.

However, there are also plenty of places that make eating healthy(ish) not only easy, but also downright delicious.

Below are a few of our favorite healthy Pittsburgh dishes that will fill you up, tantalize your taste buds, and not completely derail your diet.

The seasonal salad at The Vandal changes frequently, but it is always flavorful and filling, including fresh vegetables, fruit, tangy dressing, and plenty of farro.

Hot Food Bar at the East End Food Co-op

Fill up on a rotating selection of freshly and ethically prepared foods at the East End Food Co-op. Their hot food bar features cooked vegetables, prepared salads, plenty of protein options, and sometimes has fun themes like “taco night.”

More and more people are being turned on to the health benefits of bone broth. And, this time of year, it can also help warm you up. Core Life Eatery at The Block Northway has an entire menu of various bone broth bowls, and even sells quarts to go.

These salty treats are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, as well as Vitamin D. The crew at or, The Whale and Evangeline (both inside the Distrikt Hotel) have an entire menu of canned fishes from around the world. And, if you just happen to crave oysters, caviar, and champagne while you’re there, that can also be accommodated.

Instagram alert – the folks at Salúd Juicery can not only whip up healthy and filling smoothie bowl, but they also transform them into a beautiful treat. With an entire menu of smoothies and pressed juices, you’re sure to find something in your palette.

Vegetable Hoagie at Bitter Ends Garden

The vegetable hoagie at Bitter End Garden is loaded up with fresh vegetables from the restaurant’s garden, smeared with pumpkin puree, and packed between slices of freshly made bread. In fact, the restaurant’s entire menu is very vegetable forward.

The Gluten Free Goat has plenty of options for gluten free eaters, but the waffle is a customer favorite. Stop by their cafe for an entire menu of gluten free treats, including donuts and cakes.

Lili Cafe is another restaurant with a rotating menu of treats, many of which are vegan and vegetarian. One interesting dish featured last year was the drool-worthy spinach melt.

Roasted Pork Stir-fry at Honeygrow

East Liberty

This new fast-casual spot in East Liberty prides itself on their fresh and locally sourced ingredients. From salads to stir-fry bowls, you’ll be certain to find something that interests you. Save room for dessert – they also have a “Honey Bar” featuring yogurt topped with fresh fruit, granola, coconut, and a maple drizzle.

Falafel Salad at B52 Cafe

If you’ve never been to B52 Cafe, now is the perfect time to try their Mediterranean-American fusion dishes, homemade chocolates, coffee bar, and kombucha on draft. The falafel salad is a dish not to be missed.
