Move over, Pitts-burger…. buonasara, capicola… ahoy, colossal fish… tofu’s taking over at Primanti Bros.
On Sunday, Primanti Bros. unveiled its latest creation, a new grilled tofu sandwich, on its Instagram account. The sandwich follows the classic Primanti’s “almost famous” formula – homemade bread, ample amounts of slaw and fries – but replaces its usual meat options with grilled tofu.
“The longer we thought about America’s Hardest Working Sandwich, the more we realized that the meat was working a little too hard,” the legendary sandwich shop said in its post. “Stop in today for our classic sandwich – now made with a thick slab of grilled tofu.
The post captured Primanti’s latest creation in all its glory – soft, pillowy bread, thick tomato slices, crunchy slaw, more than a fistful of fresh cut fries, melty provolone, and the aforementioned grilled tofu. The only thing missing? A big old “April Fool’s!” Yes, the gag rolled out on April Fool’s Day, so don’t go rushing to the Strip expecting to sample the imaginary sando for yourself. But if you ask nicely and BYOT (bring your own tofu), maybe they make your soy-based dreams come true (or maybe not). As for us, we’re sticking with capicola and cheese… because if it ain’t broke, don’t futz with it.
Primanti Bros.’ April Fool’s Day game is always strong. Their biggest prank may have come in 2013, when they announced that they were adding a caricature of retired Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis to their wall of beloved Pittsburgh legends. In addition to being audaciously hilarious, the stunt also piqued interest in the local icons they were actually saluting – members of the Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey program – who were added to the wall of heroes.
