What We’re Listening To: Our Favorite Podcasts Of The Year

On the eve of the busiest travel day of the year, we thought that we’d give you a little something to listen to on those long drives (or plane rides) to wherever it is that you’re going this Thanksgiving.

With so many good podcasts being produced right now (and really… there are so many), it can be hard to figure out what to devote time to. So to help you out, we’ve been listening to a bunch that focus solely on food, cooking and restaurants, and are sharing our favorites.

The Splendid Table: Lynne Rossetto Kasper has been hosting The Splendid Table for 20 years – and she has it down pat. This weekly hour-long show is a mix of produced food stories, and call-in questions about cooking and hosting tips. And an added bonus? Lynn’s voice could melt butter.

KCRW’s Good Food: Broadcast from California’s KCRW, this weekly show hosted by chef Evan Kleiman is fairly Los Angeles-centric. But, if you’re down to listen to reports from the Santa Monica Farmers Market, and restaurant reviews from Los Angeles Times’ Jonathan Gold (and you should, because they’re great), you’ll also find some really well-reported pieces each week, like this piece about American apples finally arriving in China.

The Sporkful: If you’ve ever gotten in a fight with someone about the perfect sauce-to-cheese ratio on a pizza, this podcast is for you. Host Dan Pashman gets into the nitty, gritty of how to ‘eat more better.’ Each episode of this weekly show features a different guest, and clock in at a half an hour or less – perfectly snackable content for when you need something short to listen to.

Eat Your Words: Cathy Erway, author of the excellent ‘Not Eating Out In New York,’ hosts this weekly podcast that’s devoted to authors in the food world. From cookbook writers to food memoir authors, she delves deep into the food industry through its literature.

America’s Test Kitchen: From finding the best apple peeler to uncovering the secrets to the best roasted chicken, America’s Test Kitchen takes the science of food (and equipment) to a whole new level. You’re guaranteed to learn something (and probably a bunch of things) every single episode.

Burnt Toast: Brought to you by Food52, this podcast takes a look at what happens behind the scenes at the cooking website, and takes an in-depth look at the recipes that make it to the site, plus one-on-one conversations with cookbook authors, food writers, chefs and more.

And, just because man cannot live (or be entertained) on food and food alone, here’s two podcasts that we adore that have nothing to do with food or eating.

Mystery Show: We can’t even begin to describe how much we love this series, and how sad we are that there are only a few episodes available. In each episode, host Starlee Kine solves mysteries… mysteries that can only be solved by wearing out shoe leather. It’s weird, and funny, and everyone we’ve subjected it to has been instantly charmed.

You Must Remember This: While stories of old Hollywood practically write themselves, the amount of work and research that goes into each episode is truly astounding. This weekly podcast’s current season is featuring stories from the golden age of MGM – think Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland’s storied careers, and massive downfalls. Last season focused on the Charles Manson murders, and what Hollywood’s role was in the slayings, and so worth a listen. We’re riveted every single week.
