Curious about kimchi? Questions about kombucha? The Pittsburgh Fermentation Festival will be celebrating these fermented favorites and more with a full day of taste tests, workshops and food contests.

On Sunday, February 28, the food-focused festival will take place at Pittsburgh Public Market, on what will be the market’s final open day.

Jason Lubecki of Ferment Pittsburgh and Nathan Holmes of Family Farms Creamery are spearheading the event, which will bring together local food businesses, chefs, and fermentation enthusiasts.

Lubecki says that while this is the first fermentation festival held in Pittsburgh, they’re popular in other cities.

“Usually, they’re held in the fall,” Lubecki says. “But we wanted people to get excited about the prospect of fermenting before the growing season starts.”

Local businesses that will be sampling and selling fermented products include sauerkrauts from Prescription Foods and Laurel Vista, kimchi from Clarion River Organics, The Pickled Chef and Ferment Pittsburgh, kombucha from the Coop and Red Star, cider from Stanton Heights-based community group Bad Apples, and wild yeast brews from Hop Farm Brewing Company. Plus, Family Farm Creameries will be releasing a brand-new kefir ice cream for the event.

The event is free to attend, and family-friendly. A $10 contribution will give access to five workshops throughout the day, which will include a guide to using fermented foods with Legume’s Trevett Hooper, a cider demonstration from Bad Apples, and a discussion about the health benefits from fermented foods with Prescription Foods.

Other activities will include a kid’s sauerkraut-making table, an all-day cheese-making demonstration, and a tasting contest for home fermenters.
