Grist House is making some serious waves in the new year.
The Millvale-based craft brewery has just announced plans to expand to a second location in Collier Township – and their new building has a pretty unique story.
Grist House recently bought the former Nike Missile Command Center, a 55,000 square foot property, and will be converting the space into the brewery’s main beer production hub. The new location will also have a large taproom, along with a retail space and an extensive barrel-aging program.
While there’s no timeline in place yet for the project to be completed, fans of the five-year-old brewery can follow along with the construction progress on Grist House’s newly-released blog, which shares the fascinating history of the building (it was constructed in 1957 as a missile command center during the Cold War, and is situated at one of the highest points in Allegheny County… hello, brews with a view!), and more about the plans for the space. While many of the construction details are still under wraps, Grist House noted that there will be a significant outdoor element to their Collier Township location.
The new barrel-aging program has already started in the building, which will mean some unique barrel-aged beers coming out of the brewery.
And, fans of the original Millvale location, don’t worry – the company has no plans to move or change the Millvale taproom in any way.
