Vegan Ice Cream Shop Now Open

February 16, 2019 by Madeline Quigley 2 Comments

The wait is over! Sugar Spell Scoops – the highly anticipated vegan ice cream shop opening on Canal Street in Sharpsburg – has officially announced an opening date!

The shop will open on Friday, February 22nd, 2019. Opening hours are Friday-Sunday, 1:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. They plan to be open weekends-only through the winter.

Sugar Spells is Pennsylvania’s first all-vegan ice cream company. Chef and owner Amanda Burk has been a vegan for 12 years, and says she’s excited to be part of the expanding vegan food scene in Pittsburgh. Being able to grow her passion into a business has always been a dream of hers.

“I found in my email this old conversation from 2006 where I say my goal is to open an ice cream business,” laughs Burk. “It’s not just a spur of the moment thing. I am very food-centric.”

Sugar Spell Scoops debuted in Pittsburgh at the 2016 VegFest. Since then, Pittsburgh hasn’t been able to get enough of these frozen treats. You’ve probably seen them at Pittsburgh events like Sweet Horror at East End Brewing, or the “Sharpsmeade” Harry Potter festival.

In addition to their plant-based ice cream, the Sugar Spells is known for their decedent and colorful cakes, which (just like their ice cream) are completely vegan. The brand also sells ice cream pints at Naturally Soergel’s in Wexford.

In May of last year, Sugar Spells told Good Food Pittsburgh that guests can expect to find fresh scoops, sundaes, takeaway pints, “magic wands” (similar to drumsticks), and cakes for special order at the new shop. There will be limited indoor and outdoor seating.

At many of their events in Pittsburgh, Sugar Spells formulated unique flavors and specialty sundaes. For example, on Cinco De Mayo, the brand served vegan floats with horchata ice cream and Mexican Coke. For the Sweet Horror popup, they served blue ice cream cups with red dye and white chocolate chips to look like a shark attack, and black ice cream with activated charcoal.

“My vision is just a happy place. Somewhere fun for people to come and forget about whatever is going on in their life,” says Burk.

This is fantastic to see another place not profiting off of exploiting animals! Vegan for the animals, always!
