Alta Via, big Burrito’s New Italian Restaurant, Sets Opening Date

Prolific Pittsburgh restaurant group big Burrito has announced the opening date of Alta Via, their new Italian restaurant in O’Hara Township.

The restaurant will officially open to the public with regular hours on Monday, April 1.

Alta Via is located on Freeport Road in Fox Chapel Plaza in the space formerly occupied by Donato’s (next to The Coffee Tree).  The name is a reference to the famous footpath through the Dolomites in Italy.

As the name alludes, the concept is inspired by the fresh cuisine and active lifestyle of mountain towns in the Italian Alps. Guests can expect a selection of fresh-made pastas every day, seasonal vegetables, and comforting wood-hearth cooking, led by executive chef Ben Sloan (Kaya, Eleven).

Alta Via’s Mediterranean-meets-Northern-California-inspired menu includes appetizers like Warm Ricotta Toast with grilled sweet and spicy peppers, Tuna Tartare with focaccia crostini, lemon aioli, fennel, parsley, and Fried Calamari with crispy Meyer lemons, parsley aioli, gremolata. It also features pasta dishes like Tortelli with ricotta, spinach, La Quercia Speck, and melted onion, Ricotta Cavatelli with clams, guanciale, saffron, and crusty bread, Spaghetti with lemon, prosecco, uni butter, pine nuts, and bread crumbs, and Potato Gnocchi fennel pesto, toasted walnuts, and Grana Padano Riserva.

The beverage program features cocktails like the Italian Mule, Cucumber Mint Cooler, Via Manhattan, and the Alta Aviation, and a concise wine list offering a balance of Italian and American wine. The beer selection has a heavy focus on Western Pennsylvania producers.

Big Burrito first told Good Food Pittsburgh of their plans to take over the space last year. The restaurant group recently opened their ninth Mad Mex location across the street in the Waterworks Plaza at the end of 2018.

Alta Via offers a 90 seat dining room, as well as a large horseshoe-shaped bar with seating for 40. The full menu will be available in both rooms.

Opening hours are as follow:
Monday-Thursday: 4:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M.
Friday & Saturday: 4:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M.
Sunday: 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

The restaurant intends to start brunch service this spring.
