New Restaurants to Try in Pittsburgh:

Alta Via

Alta Via is a brand-new Italian restaurant by the prolific Pittsburgh restaurant group big Burrito. Located on Freeport Road in Fox Chapel Plaza, the name is a nod to the famous footpath through the Dolomites in Italy. The concept is inspired by the fresh cuisine and active lifestyle of mountain towns in the Italian Alps. Guests can expect daily fresh-made pastas, seasonal vegetables, and wood-hearth cooking, led by executive chef Ben Sloan (Kaya, Eleven).

Alta Via’s Mediterranean-meets-Northern-California-inspired menu includes: Warm Ricotta Toast, Fried Calamari, Potato Gnocchi, Rigatoni, and Pappardelle.

Murray Avenue is now home to Took Took 98. This quaint restaurant offers classic Thai street food dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Favorite dishes on the menu include: Pork Jerky, Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, and Dumplings. The name and logo are a nod the rickshaws that dot the streets of Thailand. Took Took 98 offers delivery, catering, events, and private parties. The website What To Eat in Pittsburgh provides a detailed review of the menu, and the story behind their opening.

Garbarino’s

We reported last month that Garbarino’s, a fourth-generation Italian restaurant, opened in East Liberty. The restaurant took over the space previously occupied by La Riviera Bistro, and is under the same ownership as The Twisted Frenchman, though it operates as separate Italian wine bar and neighborhood trattoria. The menu features family recipes, freshly made pasta, and entrees such as Veal Chop Parmesan and Chicken Piccata.

The name is a homage to the original Garbarino’s restaurant, opened by chef/partner Andrew Garbarino’s great grandaunt, Louisa, in 1945 on Long Island. After immigrating to America from Genoa, Louisa worked to save enough money to open an Italian restaurant that incorporated the Southern Italian cooking she loved, with the Northern touches that were deeply rooted in her heritage.

Food and cocktails with a rooftop view of Oakland? We’re listening. Now open in Oakland is Spirits & Tales, the brand-new restaurant atop The Oaklander hotel. The restaurant is a one-of-a-kind destination in the neighborhood, providing a chic lounge, dining room, wrap-around windows, and balcony with views of the neighborhood.

The menu is spearheaded by chef Jessica Lewis (Carota Cafe, or, The Whale) and is a “modern brasserie,” featuring playful, vegetable forward dishes that are locally-sourced when possible. Options include: Grilled Octopus, Salmon Tartare, Braised Beef Cheek, Marseillais Fish, and more.

Wolfie’s Pub

In the space formerly occupied by Pirata on Forbes Avenue is Wolfie’s Pub. The restaurant offers “American bites, brews and specialty drinks,” with a menu featuring appetizers, salads, pierogies, burgers, grilled cheese, and sandwiches.

Notably, the space aims to be a new music destination Downtown, and is working with Point Park University to make this happen. The bar features live music five (!) nights a week. Upcoming acts include: Antoinette Manganas Jazz Trio, JD Chaisson Trio, Dan Bubien & The Delta Struts, Jessica Lee, and more!

Arepittas

The quaint restaurant under the parking garage on Cherry Way has rebranded to “Arepittas,” a Venezuelan Street Food restaurant. Arepittas is located in the former Chevere space, another restaurant that offered fast-casual Venezuelan food with an emphasis on arepas. The restaurant is a weekday lunch option, and is open Monday – Friday, 11:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M., so be strategic about your visit!

Two Sisters

Two Sisters is a new Vietnamese restaurants located in East Liberty, catty-corner from the Hotel Indigo. The restaurant is the passion of Trinh Phan and Trang Somphomphakdy, sisters who moved to Pittsburgh to open the restaurant. Originally from the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, the sisters worked in many restaurants in Vietnam before moving to America. Phan and Somphomphakdy are the aunts of Kellie and Tuyen Truong, owners of Banh Mi & Ti in Lawrenceville.

The menu features a variety of Vietnamese dishes with a focuses on pho, the popular Vietnamese noodle soup. Two Sisters offers four types of pho: beef, chicken, seafood, and vegan.  They also offer rice bowls and vermicelli noodle dishes. The food is prepared by the two sisters, for whom pho is their “main dish.”

Another new restaurant in East Liberty is Mola, a seafood restaurant specializing in sushi, hand rolls, bao, dumplings, bubble tea, liquor, and more! According to their website, spearheaded by Alex Tang and Mimi Lee, the restaurant aims “to share authentic, delicious Asian foods to the public.” The expansive menu offers appetizers like P.E.I. Mussels, Tuna Tartar, Spicy Crab Salad, and various types of dumplings. There is also Nigiri, Sashimi, hand rolls, bao, and rice bowls.

There is something for everyone on the menu, so be sure to stop by and see for yourself!
