412 Food Rescue wants you to know that when it comes to produce, what matters most is what’s on the inside.
Since launching last year, the community organization has been ‘rescuing’ dumpster-destined food from retailers, wholesalers and restaurants and donating it to people in need. Now, they’ve set their sights on ‘ugly’ produce, pieces of fruit and vegetables that have imperfect appearances, but are otherwise tasty and safe to eat.
To get that produce in the hands of more consumers, 412 Food Rescue has just announced plans to launch an Ugly CSA program with Penn’s Corner Farm Alliance, offering perfectly good (if perfectly ugly) produce to CSA members at a deeply discounted rate.
The Ugly CSA will run for eight weeks in August and September, and will be available only as a full share. Each subscription is $120 for the entire season, which includes one box a week of local produce that will vary based on availability, and what’s in season. There are two planned pickup locations, Penn’s Corner Farm Alliance Warehouse at 150 54th Street, and Olive & Marlow, at 5975 Broad Street.
Space is limited, and spots will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
