Popular downtown Italian eatery Pizzaiolo Primo will be opening its doors again soon – with a new owner.
The Market Square restaurant, which closed in December due to the pandemic, has been purchased by the Ron Sofranko Group, and is set to reopen later this month.
Takeout food will be available by mid-April, and in-house dining will resume by May 1.
Not much is set to change at the restaurant under the new ownership. The Ron Sofranko Group has kept core members of the restaurant team in place, including the general manager and the restaurant’s original executive chef, Richard Sphatt.
Sofranko, who was a partner in the restaurant when it opened as Il Pizzaiolo Market Square in 2013, says in a release that bringing back key team members was important.
“We’re thrilled to bring Pizzaiolo Primo back to Downtown Pittsburgh and provide the great Italian food and wines the restaurant’s patrons love so much,” he says. “We’re very confident Pittsburgh’s restaurant scene will
rebound from the pandemic soon and purchasing Pizzaiolo Primo was a way for us to put our money where our mouth is.”
The restaurant will continue to offer its Neopolitan menu, which features pasta, pizza prepared in a 1000-degree wood-burning oven, and Italian wines.
