Hungover? You’re not alone. If you celebrated the end of 2016 a little too much last night (and who wouldn’t?), you might be looking for a cure for what ails you. We’ve talked to a few of Pittsburgh’s best industry insiders about what they do when they’ve had a few too many.
Wes Shonk, bartender extraordinaire at Hidden Harbor says that the sooner you can take his home remedy, the better you’ll feel. He swears by Pedialyte, Alka Seltzer and ibuprofen.
“I can get a little nerdy about why these work, but I’ll keep it short,” Shonk says. “The liver takes time to process all the alcohol, and there is no way to speed that up. So instead, I recommend making that time more bearable. The ibuprofen to just generally dull the pains, obviously. The Pedialyte and Alka Seltzer help counteract dehydration and Metabolic Acidosis (where the chemically basic Alka Seltzer balances the acidity of your alcohol-laden bloodstream).”
Curtis Gamble, who owns Bloomfield’s Station, heads straight to Espresso a Mano for a 6-shot skim latte, while downing lots of water and Excedrin. “If I work that day, I just get up and move forward until I don’t feel like garbage anymore,” he says. “I’m lucky I come from some, for better or worse, hard drinking stock, so I’ve always been pretty resilient.”
And Michael DeSimone, co-owner of Ampd Group (which sold out all eight of their NYE events at spots like Social House Seven, Diesel, and Steel Cactus) says that the only thing that works for him is the hair-of-the-dog treatment… at one of his restaurants, of course.
“I always recommend the Bloody Mary bar at Ten Penny, Local or Steel Cactus,” he says.
As for us? We’re old school when it comes to our hangover cure: lots of water, lots of ibuprofen, and an ice-cold shower. Here’s to a pain-free 2017!
