Black Radish Kitchen Launches “Love and Lox,” a Bagel CSA

Pittsburgh chef Kate Romane is going back to her New Jersey roots this spring to bring proper bagels to the city – and everyone is welcome to come along for the ride.

Romane, former owner and chef of the Highland Park restaurant e2, and now owner and chef of Black Radish Kitchen catering company, has launched a bagel CSA named “Love and Lox.”  The CSA begins this April, and lasts for three months (April, May, and June).

“A couple of years ago I started fooling around with making bagels, and we have been making them all along, even since we closed the restaurant,” Romane says. “We’ve been looking ways to get involved with our customers without a storefront, and these ideas came together.”

And thus, Love and Lox was born. This new bagel subscription service will allow fans of bagels and Romane’s cooking to enjoy a bagel buffet every month. In addition to 12 handmade bagels and 12 oz. of cured salmon, every order includes specialty accouterments like caper butter, honey butter, house-made jam, and spring chive whipped cream cheese. As the seasons advance, Black Radish hopes to include local jams and preserves.

While it is easy to want to save these delicious bagels for yourself, the program is an awesome excuse to host a small get together, and let Black Radish handle the work.

“We hope it encourages people to host their own small brunch in their house. This program really showcases what we’re doing, and that you don’t need a huge party or event to use our services,” she says. “We do bagel bars for our brunch catering, and it’s great because it’s less work for the host. Instead of making a lot of small plates, you can let your guests assemble a bagel.”

Pickup for Love and Lox is either mid-month (beginning April 14), or at the end of every month, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Black Radish Kitchen in Point Breeze. The subscription is $125 for three months, and can be purchased online. Orders for the April 14 pickup must be placed by April 8.
