Sad news for healthy food fans on the South Side.
The Pittsburgh City Paper has reported that Amazing Cafe, the highly-celebrated vegan cafe attached to the Amazing Yoga studio on East Carson Street is permanently closed after employees staged a one-day strike earlier this week.
According to the CP, staffers sent a letter to owners Sean and Karen Conley on May 20, informing them of their plans to strike, which they say were the result of serious under-staffing, late paychecks, and poor communication. In response, the Conleys announced that the restaurant “would be closed indefinitely.”
In a statement to the CP, Sean Conley said that Amazing Cafe was not closing down because of the strike, but rather because it was not making enough money.
“We loved serving the community,” wrote Conley. “Despite what was reported to the City Paper by a former employee, we had great relationships with our staff. Unfortunately, the cafe has not performed well enough financially. The cafe is now closed permanently. We will miss being a part of the community and we would like to thank all of [the] customers that have been so supportive.”
There’s much more of this story to unpack in the City Paper’s piece, including an appearance by the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Pittsburgh, an assessment of the cafe’s daily financials, and a potential unfair labor practice charge. Read the entire piece here.
