When the news broke that Conflict Kitchen, the nationally-acclaimed restaurant in Schenley Plaza, was closing permanently, Pittsburghers were heartbroken. And while future plans for relaunching Conflict Kitchen in a new location are still up in the air, an exciting new project has already opened in the space.
Mesa PGH is a New Mexican takeout restaurant that will be taking over the space. After a few days of soft opening, the restaurant is having its official grand opening on Monday, June 19, and will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day after.
NEXTpittsburgh reported that owner Robert Sayre, who previously worked at Conflict Kitchen, was inspired to create this menu by the cuisine he experienced when visiting his family in New Mexico. Dishes in New Mexico can often involve a mixture of influences, including Mexican, Spanish, and Native American. Chili sauces, beans, and rice will be staples of the menu.
Menu items will rotate over time, with Sayre introducing new specials, but the opening menu includes Tamales, Biscochitos (anise and cinnamon sugar cookies), and Sopaipilla (warm puffs of fried dough, served plain or drizzled with honey). They’ll also be offering a Green Chile Stew with pork and potatoes, two different kinds of Enchiladas (Chicken and Green Chile, and Green Chile and Cheese), and a vegetarian New Mexican Chopped Salad.
Mesa will be open on for a soft opening Sunday, June 18 for a few hours throughout the afternoon, depending on the weather. Follow the restaurant on Facebook for updates on the menu.
