Whether you’re a fan of a cookie with a crunch or treat with a little more chew, there’s nothing more satisfying than a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie — and these 10 Pittsburgh-area bakeries are offering up some of the best ones in town.
350° Bakery
South Side Slopes
While 350° Bakery in the South Side Slopes may be best known for their wildly good biscuit sandwiches, they also boast a packed pastry case every day, filled with tasty treats like muffins, brownies and their classic chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are so popular, in fact, that they’re regularly available at other spots throughout the city, including Tazza D’Oro, Bird on the Run, Inkwell and Arriviste. (2427 S. 18th St.)
Nancy B’s Bakery
West Homestead
One of the most famous cookies in Pittsburgh, the original chocolate chip at Nancy’s B’s in West Homestead, has been a cookie staple in Pittsburgh since the shop opened 38 years ago. The massive cookies have a solid crunch on the edges — and a slight chew in the center — and are still created using the original recipe from the late Nancy Bertram Runco, whose son Michael now runs the shop. During the warmer months, you can also find Nancy B’s chocolate chip cookies at Page Dairy Mart, another Pittsburgh institution on the South Side, as part of their famous Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae. (415 W. Seventh Ave.)
Madeleine Bakery
Wilkinsburg
Madeleine Bakery’s exceptional chocolate chip cookies are made using a blend of milk chocolate and dark chocolate chips, then topped with a dash of Maldon sea salt to give them a deliciously sweet and salty bite. The chocolate chip cookies are available daily at the Wilkinsburg bakery, in addition to Madeleine’s assorted croissants, Danishes, canneles and other pastries. (609 S. Trenton Ave.)
Squirrel Hill
Five Points Artisan Bakeshop has a devoted fan base, who regularly line up for the bakery’s baguettes, sourdoughs and croissants. But you definitely don’t want to sleep on trying one of their giant cookies, especially their perfectly chewy chocolate chip option, studded with extra-large chunks of dark chocolate (and don’t miss their Chocolate Rye ones, either.). (6524 Wilkins Ave.)
Good L’Oven
Bellevue & Ross Township
Not only are Good L’Oven’s extra-large, extra-crunchy chocolate chip cookies available at their Bellevue store, but they’re also available for shipping nationwide, so you can send a cookie gift box (they also offer dozens of other flavors, like Brownie Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin and Cherry Dark Chocolate Pistachio) to friends around the country. (417 Lincoln Ave., Bellevue & 322 Sewickley Oakmont Road)
Bluebird Kitchen
Downtown
Bluebird Kitchen always has a variety of fresh-baked cookies available, including their chocolate chip cookies (made with Valrhona chocolate), and they also offer a vegan chocolate chip cookie, made without using butter, eggs or dairy. Their vegan cookies are crunchy on the edges, with a soft center, and the perfect amount of chocolate in each bite. (221 Forbes Ave.)
Sinful Sweets
Downtown
Known for their outrageous sweet creations, Sinful Sweets has a chocolate chip cookie for the most extreme dessert fans: Two fresh soft-baked cookies, sandwiching a massive scoop of edible chocolate-chip cookie dough — and rolled in extra chocolate chips for an additional chocolate bite. Find them daily in their Downtown shop. (539 Liberty Ave.)
Gluten Free Goat
Garfield
Though Gluten Free Goat switched to a wholesale bakery operation in 2019, the bakeshop still offers limited pickup options for their allergen-free cookies and treats, including their popular chocolate chip cookie. Each cookie is free of gluten, soy and peanuts, and is an extra-crispy option for cookie crunchers. Cookies and other baked goods are also available for shipping. (4905 Penn Ave.)
Colangelo’s Bakery & Cafe
Strip District
This old-school Italian bakery prepares all of their pastries and treats, including their deliciously crispy chocolate chip cookies, from scratch (and with love, they say). They’re available every day at their Strip District location. (207 21st St.)
The Pie Place
Bethel Park
There are more than a dozen cookies regularly available at The Pie Place in Bethel Park, including snickerdoodles, Russian tea cookies, lady locks and Oreo truffles, but one of their most popular flavors is their classic chocolate chip. The slightly chewy cookies have a subtle hint of saltiness and are packed with chocolate chips. (1775 N. Highland Road, #1219)
