Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week officially kicks off tomorrow, with 10 days of special tappings, limited releases, and beer events throughout the city, from Kegs + Opera to a Maryland Crab Boil.
The full PCBW event list is massive – about 300 events total – but we’ve narrowed it down to our picks for the 16 events that we’re most excited about, and are definitely on our ‘must attend’ list.
April 14: PCBW Kickoff Party at Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. $10 gets you a 5 oz. sampling glass, plus all-night beer samples from All Saints, CoStar, East End, Helltown, Rivertowne, Roundabout, Spoonwood and more.
April 15 – April 17: Green Flash Tap Takeover at Industry Public House. An unbelievable 30 Green Flash brews will be available, including one-off tasting room beers, and a number of Cellar 3 releases that haven’t yet been sold in PA. All 30 will be tapped on Friday, and will stay up as long as they last (which probably won’t be long).
April 15: Firkin Alternatives at Apis Mead & Winery. Apis Mead & Winery is taking a different approach to PCBW, and will be featuring their best craft beer alternatives. They’ll be releasing rare casks and firkins, with some help from their friends at Arsenal Cider House and Kaliber Brewing. Offerings include a PCBW collaboration, an ‘Extra Funky/Sour’ Lemon Bourbon, Hopped Tangerine Ginger, and more. Plus Evil Swine BBQ will be serving up deliciousness all night.
April 15 – April 24: Free Beer Ice Cream at Klavon’s Ice Cream. We love beer. We love ice cream. And when it’s free? We love them even more. Klavon’s will be handing out samples of their Black Strap Stout beer ice cream (it’s non-alcoholic!) every night during PCBW after 8:00 p.m.
April 17: Kegs + Eggs + Opera at the Mattress Factory Museum. Spend the afternoon sampling brews from Penn Brewery and War Streets Brewery, and sipping Wigle Whisky Bloody Mary’s while walking through the musum’s galleries. The Pittsburgh Opera will also be performing a preview of their upcoming production of ‘The Rake’s Progress,’ and food will be available for purchase from The Burgh Bites Cart, PGH Crepes, and the MF Café omelette bar.
April 17: Spoonwood Brewing’s PCBW Cornhole Tournament. Get your cornhole hustle on at Spoonwood Brewing’s Cornhold Tournament. It’s $40 per team to enter, and the winner will receive 50% off the money raised – the other half will go to a charity of the winning team’s choosing. Plus, there will be plenty of Spoonwood drafts available, too.
April 17: Meet the Brewers of PCBW at Rivertowne. Chat up the best local brewers at Rivertowne from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. for one of PCBW’s premier events, which brings together brewers and craft beer fans for a night of conversation. Rivertowne will be featuring a Pittsburgh brewery tap takeover, with beer from “as many local breweries as possible.”
April 18 – 21: ON TAP at Ace Hotel. For four nights in a row, the Ace Hotel is featuring a different brewery for a special Brewmasters Dinner Series. Monday will feature East End Brewing, Tuesday is Grist House, Wednesday will be Hop Farm Brewing Company, and Thursday has Spoonwood Brewing. Whitfield’s chef Bethany Zozula is in charge of each night’s three-course dinner, and four beer pairings will be provided by each night’s featured brewery. Seats are $50 per person per dinner, or join them for all four nights for $175.
April 18: Flying Dog Beer Dinner at Industry Public House. Flying Dog brewmaster Matt Trophy will be attending the five-course dinner, featuring Flying Dog pairings. Tickets are $50 each.
April 18: Night Cap at Meat & Potatoes. Stay up late at Meat & Potatoes with a special late-night menu featuring $5 burgers, hot dogs, and $3 sides, plus $3 cans on the patio.
April 20: PCBW Homebrew Contest Winner Draft Release at ShuBrew. Back in March, Apis Mead & Winery hosted a homebrewing competition with 35 Pittsburgh homebrewers, all battling it out for the chance to brew professionally with ShuBrew…. And the winning brew is being released tonight.
April 20: Dinner with Helltown Brewing at Smallman Galley. Each of Smallman Galley’s four chefs will contribute to this four-course dinner, paired with Mt. Pleasant’s own Helltown Brewing. Menu items include Head-on prawn with ramp corn bread from Jacqueline Wardle of Josephine’s Toast, and Raspberry Bavarian with malted waffles from Provision PGH’s Stephen K. Eldridge. Seats are $85 per person.
April 21: Craft Coloring at Grist House. CraftPittsburgh magazine is teaming up with the artist behind ‘Illustrated Breweries of Pennsylvania’ for an evening of adult coloring and adult beverages. The first 25 participants will get a free PCBW glass, and there will be prizes for the best pages.
April 22: Pittsburgh Craft Brewhaha at Altar Bar. You’ll get to try more than 25 different craft beers, including new and soon-to-be released summer brews. Plus enjoy live music all night and food trucks, too. Tickets are $30.
April 23: Maryland Crab Boil with Flying Dog at Hough’s. Hough’s is hosting their first Maryland-style crab boil, which will include an all-you-can-eat buffet, and a pint of Flying Dog Dead Rise. Tickets are $60, and a few are still available… though they probably won’t be for very long.
April 23: Oyster Fest 2016 at Blue Dust. Head under the Homestead Grays Bridge from 1:00 to 10:00 p.m. for 20 craft brews on tap, infused cocktails, fresh oysters from Rogue Farms, food trucks and live music. Admission is free.
