Did you know that every year, 20% of produce is rejected from grocery stores due to their imperfect appearance, and over six billion tons of fruits and vegetables are unharvested each year for the same reason?
Those stats are alarming to local food rescue organization 412 Food Rescue, and so they decided to do something about it.
Last year, the organization introduced their first Ugly CSA, a Community Supported Agriculture Program that features produce that, while still perfectly edible and tasty, doesn’t meet the cosmetic standards of many buyers. And this year, they’re expanding the program, and releasing 120 shares for purchase.
The Ugly CSA will run for 12 weeks from August through October, with four drop sites all over the city. Also new this year, the CSA is SNAP-eligible. Produce will come from Penn’s Corner Farm Alliance, and each CSA will feature local bread and other special products from various vendors.
The CSA is $240 for the 12-week program, with an additional $10 processing fee.
