Summer Cocktails and Oakmont Cupcakes: A Pairing Guide

August 19, 2014 by Emily Catalano Leave a Comment

pairing-guide-1

Ever since we tried our first Oakmonter, we’ve been in love with Oakmont Bakery. It’s a neighborhood institution that has legions of fans, and some of the best gourmet cupcakes around – perfectly portioned cakes, stuffed and topped with a variety of different icings, buttercreams, ganaches, and cookie crumbles.

And, since we’ve been spending a big chunk of this summer tinkering with new drink recipes in our home bar, we thought that we’d take two of our favorite summer treats – cocktails and cupcakes – and pair them together.

The expert bakers at Oakmont gave us their picks for perfect pairings, and we’re sharing a few of our cocktail recipes with you. So, while everyone else is lining up for Pumpkin Beer (it’s still August, you know), we’re going to enjoy these last few days of summer with a cool cocktail and a sweet treat.

Strawberry Basil Crush:

  • 1 shot vodka
  • 6 strawberries
  • 5 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 slice lemon
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 cup club soda

Muddle strawberries, basil and lemon together. Add honey, and vodka. Add crushed ice, and topped with club soda. Shake, and serve.

Strawberries and chocolate are oh, so good together – and that’s why Oakmont paired our Strawberry Basil Crush with their Double Trouble cupcake. It’s a chocolate cake, filled with creamy chocolate, and topped with chocolate icing and chocolate ganache. And it’s amazing.

Tennessee Sweet Tea

  • 1 cup plain brewed iced tea
  • 1 shot honey whiskey
  • I large orange slice
  • I sprig mint
  • I tsp. agave syrup

Muddle orange, mint, and agave in shaker. Add crushed ice, and top with iced tea. Shake, and serve with orange slice.

Oakmont paired our Tennessee Sweet Tea with their Strawberry Lemonade cupcake, a sweet yellow cake, filled with fresh strawberry buttercream, and topped with a honeyed strawberry.

Appalachian Lemonade

  • 1 shot moonshine
  • 1 large slice of lemon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 sprig mint

Muddle lemon, sugar, and mint in shaker. Add crushed ice, and shot of moonshine. Shake, are serve with sugared lemon slice.

Our Appalachian Lemonade pairs perfectly with Oakmont’s Sassy Razzy cupcake, a light white almond cake with raspberry filling, and creamy raspberry buttercream. It’s topped with a fresh raspberry, and drizzled with white chocolate.

Want to try them yourself? Gourmet cupcakes are always available at Oakmont (check out their ‘Attitude’ line) for $2.50 each, or $25 a dozen.
