A Texas-Style Barbecue Restaurant Is Coming to Lawrenceville

Hey Pittsburgh – we’ve got your summer food plans on lock.

The founders of Morgan’s Barbecue in Brooklyn, New York, are bringing a brand-new barbecue project to Lawrenceville, with a giant outdoor space and straight-from-Texas style offerings.

Walter’s Barbecue will be located at 4501 Butler Street, across the street from Banh Mi & Ti, and next to New Amsterdam.

Prior to being transformed into Walter’s, the space was previously an auto body shop. The front lot will become a huge outdoor dining space. Once open, the space will feature picnic tables, fairy lights, and yard games.

“We wanted to be a spin on a beer garden, with barbecue,” says Walter’s co-founder, Chris Morgan.

Inside, Walter’s will have a bar and additional seating. The bar will feature 16 taps, including local beers and cocktails. On the side of the lot, there is a garden where the kitchen can grow fresh produce and herbs.

One of the most exciting parts of the project, Morgan says, is the smoker, which was made by the East Texas Smoker Company.

Although the two restaurants are separate, guests can expect a similar menu to that of Morgan’s Barbecue. Popular menu items include brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and St. Louis ribs. Sides will include collard greens and Mac & Cheese.

Some of the signature menu items are the Texas red chili and the frito pie.

“This is very common food in Southeast Texas. We’re going to be a very typical smokehouse,” says Morgan.

Morgan, who is originally from Texas, opened Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbecue five years ago. While location scouting for a new restaurant, he traveled to Pittsburgh, and was happy to discover it was a great fit.

“We actually traveled and checked out a lot of different places. We didn’t know where we would land, but we know we wanted to open another restaurant,” says Morgan. “Pittsburgh reminds me of Texas a little bit. People hunt, listen to country music, and eat barbecue. We got here and and I was like, ‘Something about this feels really right.'”

Walter’s is currently under construction, but aims to be open for lunch and dinner in early summer 2018.

“Family is the most important thing to us. We want to create a community in a big city, and I think we have that opportunity here” says Morgan.

I live up the street…The restaurant looks great! It will be especially nice for the young people who need more fun in the neighborhood. It always smells great whatever they were cooking when I walked by and I want to be the first to eat there when they open!
