Prolific Pittsburgh restaurant group Big Burrito has officially announced their new concept, coming to Fox Chapel in March.
The restaurant – opening in the space formerly occupied by Donato’s – will be a modern Italian concept named Alta Via, after the famous footpath through the Dolomites in Italy.
Big Burrito first told Good Food Pittsburgh of their plans to take over the space last year. The restaurant group recently opened their ninth Mad Mex location in Pittsburgh in the plaza at the end of 2018.
The concept is inspired by the fresh cuisine and active lifestyle of California wine country and mountain towns in the Italian Alps. Guests can expect fresh-made pasta, seasonal vegetables, and comforting wood-hearth cooking.
The beverage program will feature classic cocktails and a concise wine list offering a balance of Italian and American wine. The beer selection will have a heavy focus on Western Pennsylvania producers.
On the opening menu, guests can expect to see shareable vegetable dishes including Grilled Wild Mushrooms with Smoked Mozzarella, Roasted Romanesco in Salmoriglio with Oregano, and Runner Beans with Basil and Italian Vinaigrette. The menu will also feature at least 10 fresh pastas dishes a day, all made by hand daily in Alta Via’s kitchen. Dishes include Pappardelle with Beef Short Rib Sugo and Parmigiano Vacche Rosse, Tortelli lled with Smoked Ricotta and Spinach in Melted Onion Sauce, and Riverview Farms Goat Cheese Ravioli with Lemon, Bottarga, and Pistachio. There will also be roast chicken, steaks, and fresh sh and seafood from the wood- red open hearth.
The restaurant will offer a 90 seat dining room, as well as a large horseshoe-shaped bar with seating for 40. The full menu will be available in both rooms.
Alta Via currently plans to open mid-March for dinner seven nights a week. Brunch and lunch to follow later in the spring of 2019. Other big Burrito restaurants include Mad Mex, Casbah, Kaya, Eleven, Soba and Umi.
