City Fresh Pasta Launching a Food Truck

We have three words for you: Pasta. Food. Truck.

For years, the local pasta business City Fresh Pasta has been a staple in fridges (and on plates!) around Pittsburgh.

The brand operates a cafe at Nova Place on the Northside, as well as offering wholesale orders, catering, and selling packages of their homemade pastas at various farmers markets around the city.

Next year, the brand will enter a new phase of their business when they open their very first food truck. Eric Earnest, a part-owner of City Fresh, is currently running a campaign with Honeycomb Credit (a Pittsburgh-based crowd-financing company) to buy out the rest of the company, and raise funds for a food truck.

“The product lends itself to the food truck model quite well due to the fresh made-to-order product and the speed at which we can cook the pasta. It also does very well in a to-go box,” City Fresh states on their campaign page.

Once the truck is on the road, it will offer a similar menu to their Northside cafe. This means breakfast sandwiches, premade pasta dishes, and “Pastacos”- City Pasta’s innovative Pasta/Taco hybrid. Pastacos use a pasta shell as a tortilla, and have fillings like chicken, brisket, chili lime pork, veggie, and shrimp.

The breakfast sandwiches are not your average breakfast sandwich, either. They come with a come with ravioli or pierogi (it is Pittsburgh, after all) inside of the sandwich.

“It’s unique, creative, and oh-so delicious,” laughs Earnest.

The truck will also serve City Fresh’s popular pasta dishes like Pasta Pomodoro, Alfredo, and Chicken Parm.

At the time of print, the Honeycomb campaign has 14 days left and $23,000 more dollars to reach their max goal. Earnest hopes to get the truck “rolling full time” by the start of food truck season 2020. For now, they plan to continue operations at their Nova Place location. They will also continue to sell pasta at Pittsburgh’s farmers markets.

“I just love it,” says Earnest of the markets. “Getting outside in the open air, talking to the customers one-on-one.”
