As much as we love summer in the city, there’s something special about cold winter nights that call out for comfort food. We’ve been scouring Pittsburgh for the best comforting classics that the city has to offer, and are sharing our favorite delicious, hearty, staples with LOCALpittsburgh.
To us, nothing says comfort food like a steaming bowl of soup, and Soup Nancys’ Potato and Leek is what we’ll be sipping all winter long. The Pittsburgh Public Market staple has a rotating list of daily soup specials, but her take on a classic, creamy potato soup is our favorite.
With the introduction of Anthony Hruska as Ten Penny’s new executive chef also came a new seasonal menu – and Hruska’s Truffle Mac & Cheese. This creamy, cheesy goodness is always comforting, and the hint of truffles in Hruska’s version is mouthwatering. By the time we finished our dish, we were already ready for more.
The first time we wandered into S&D Polish Deli in the Strip District, we felt at home among the traditional Polish sides and desserts. S&D is famous for their hot Haluski dish, the perfect mix of thick egg noodles and braised cabbage. It’s a dish that we make on our own for special occasions, but S&D’s is so good, we might just have to hang up our apron.
