Couch Brewery is like your home away from home – or, at the very least, your living room away from home. And that is exactly the vibe that the guys behind this highly anticipated brewery (Cary Shaffer, Darren Gailey and Mike Pearrow) envisioned.
“We want people to chill out and relax. People have home, work, and then their third place. We want to be that third place,” says Shaffer.
Perfectly positioned on Washington Boulevard in Larimer, a road that thousands of cars pass through every day, Couch is set up to be a destination for commuters looking to get a drink, or a growler filled, on their way home from work.
The grand opening, set for Saturday, April 29, is a long time coming. The Couch Brewery team has been working on the physical space for over a year, as well as brewing their signature recipes.
“It has been a year of work. No vacation days, no days off,” says Gailey. “We are excited to have it open, but I’m even more excited to look back and say, ‘We did this.’”
Customers can expect a wide selection of beers, including six permanent styles, as well as rotating seasonal drafts. Adding to the comfortable vibe, every beer on the list is named after furniture. Some brewer favorites that will remain a staple on the menu include “Blonde Shag,” an American blonde style ale,”Recliner,” an oatmeal stout, “Loveseat,” an India Pale Ale “Loveseat,” and “HiFi,” a hefeweizen. There will also be the “Velvet Series,” featuring two taps of nitrogenated beer.
As a group of friends, Shaffer, Gailey, and Pearrow have known each other for a long time. Pearrow and Shaffer starting brewing in a back yard because, “the beer they liked was getting too expensive.”
Over time, they stuck with it. Now Couch Brewery is the newest edition to Pittsburgh’s ever-growing craft beer scene, something the team is excited, and thankful, to be a part of.
“Pittsburgh’s beer scene is a brotherhood for sure, and very collegiate in a sense. The theory is that a rising tide raises all ships. The better beer scene, the more people will come,” says Gailey.
In addition to great beer, some of the bonuses of the brewery include their massive parking lot, and dog friendly policy – which makes sense, as they are next door neighbors to Camp Bow Wow. Customers can also expect a delicious selection of food trucks to roll through.
Couch Brewery’s Grand Opening is slated for April 29 at noon. After that, the hours of the brewery are Thursday through Saturday, noon to midnight.
