What’s old is new again!
Whether it’s a Klondike Bar or Skyscraper Ice Cream Cone, most Pittsburghers have a fond ice-cream memory that can be traced back to Isaly’s.
“I remember as a kid digging through the sofa cushions and everywhere else to find that last 1 cent to buy the 15 cent skyscraper ice cream cone at Isaly’s,” a fan writes on the Isaly’s website.
Well, just in time for summer and warmer weather (well, we hope!), the sweet flavors of Isaly’s ice cream no longer need to be a memory. The brand has triumphantly announced the re-release of their beloved Toasted Almond Fudge ice cream.
The highly-requested flavor is now officially part of the Isaly’s portfolio of classic flavors available to purchase in pints.
Since 1904, the regional dairy and deli chain has been known for its high-quality, flavorful ice cream. At its peak, the brand had 400 stores scattered around Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia – all scooping towering cones of farm-fresh ice cream.
The Isaly family sold the company in 1972, but a few years ago, the new owners discovered a Skyscraper Scooper and a folder of original ice cream recipes in a box of memorabilia. And thus, a new era of Isaly’s old-fashioned ice cream was born.
Isaly’s re-released classic flavors like Whitehouse Cherry, Maricopa, Mint Chocolate Chip, Vanilla, and Chocolate in 2017, all available in pints at local grocery stores.
However, the city couldn’t help asking for seconds.
“We’ve had several requests to bring back a few more of Isaly’s traditional flavors,” said Jim Conroy, Owner of Isaly’s Ice Cream, “Toasted Almond Fudge always topped the list.”
All flavors – including Toasted Almond Fudge – can now be found in the freezer section at Giant Eagle, Kuhn’s, and Shop N Save.
“My favorite back in the day!” excited commenters wrote on the Isaly’s Instagram at the announcement of the return of Toasted Almond Fudge.
No grocery shopping is complete without dessert, and Pittsburgh can finally stock up on the essentials: Chipped Chopped Ham, barbeque sauce, and plenty of old-school ice cream.

In the 1960’s and over many years my eight brothers and myself all worked at Strizzi’s Isalys on the corner of Fruit Ave. and Union Street in Farrell Pa. Isalys ice cream was always the best. After working a 4 hr. or 6 hr. shift we were permitted to take a cone home with ourselves. My favorite was always banana followed closely by their black walnut. Until I saw these comments I had forgotten about the Rainbow flavored which was not on my favorite list. Butter pecan was great.
John Strizzi, his wife Betty, two sisters Mary and Philomena were great people to work for as a teenager. God Bless them all.
