Page Dairy Mart is back for another season! The beloved South Side spot will officially reopen today, March 7 at 11:00 A.M., ready to serve up all the ice cream and classic eats Pittsburgh has been waiting for all winter long.
A Pittsburgh staple for over 70 years, Page’s got its start as a gas station that also sold ice cream. After a gas explosion in 1958 destroyed the original location, the shop moved just down the road to its current spot at 4112 East Carson Street. Today, it’s run by Margie ‘Page’ Prusia, a fourth-generation owner who took over from her parents in 2020.
Each winter, Page’s shuts down for a few months, but that doesn’t mean they’re taking a break. Behind the scenes, the team tackles updates and maintenance, getting everything ready for opening day. The final prep happens just days before they start scooping again—because everything has to be fresh.
Last year, we went behind-the-scenes at Page’s as they prepped for opening day.
While fans can expect all the classics to return, from vanilla and chocolate soft-serve to their famous steak hoagie, Prusia told us that every season brings some type of new creation.
“If I get an idea, I’m like, let’s just do it,” says Prusia.
That means that creations like “Ice Cream Nachos” or the “Cold Brewmisu,” (a take on tiramius with cold brew coffee from Big Dog Coffee) are regularly added to the menu. The latter was dreamed up by a friend of Page’s team member Ryan Andrews. When the team gathered around to try it, Prusia knew it was going to be a hit when “everyone started taking second and third bites,” she laughs.
Other under-the-radar hits include the Raspberry Almond Torte Sundae, with raspberry jam and chiffon cake, or the South Side Hot Dog, served on a toasted bun and slathered in Page’s secret homemade sauce. The food menu itself has a cult following, and when asked what they predict the first order of the 2024 season will be, everyone agreed:
“Milkshake and a steak hoagie.”
Page’s hours for the 2025 season will be 11:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. daily. Get ready, Pittsburgh – it’s almost ice cream season!
