A new restaurant is gearing up to fill the spot left vacant by e2 in Highland Park.
The restaurant, named Plate & Bowl, will be a casual, family-oriented eatery offering American fare with Asian infusions and a ton of flavor, with menu choices from fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies to inventive Buddha Bowls. Plate & Bowl will be under the same ownership as Pittsburgh-favorite Smiling Banana Leaf, which is located just across the street.
Chef Michael (Buzz) Olshansky, who has worked in several restaurants in and around Pittsburgh (including Twisted Thistle, Penn Ave Fish Company, and Typhoon) will be running the kitchen.
In his words, the restaurant will be, “Simple and honest. A lot of Buddha Bowls with fermented grains. We’re trying to keep everything under $10, but there will be some dishes in the $12 to $14 range.”
Plate & Bowl’s signature Buddha Bowls will feature meats, vegetables and other toppings, piled on various grain options. Some Buddha Bowl menu items include ‘Vegan Street Gyro,’ and Short Rib & Mac-n-Cheese.
Olshanksy says that as they prepare for the restaurant’s launch, the Plate & Bowl team is also working hard to make the place as sustainable as possible, and produce as little waste as they can.
“We want to be good stewards of the earth,” says Olshansky. “That is a priority.”
Dining will occur upstairs, and the downstairs portion of the restaurant will be set up like a café, where people can stop in to grab a coffee or juice, listen to music, and hang out. There are several large tables to accommodate work, or chatting with friends. Olshansky says that Plate & Bowl will also eventually serve bone broth downstairs, and become a “juice broth-el” of sorts, where people can enjoy the soothing, protein-rich broth.
The restaurant is scheduled to open by the end of June. Plate & Bowl will be BYOB, and will always feature several vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. The restaurant’s current plan is to be open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, and breakfast, brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.
