Spirit Planning for Rooftop Garden and Event Space

June 27, 2018 by Madeline Quigley Leave a Comment

Plans for finished Roof Garden via Spirit’s ioby page.

“Spirit’s Rooftop Garden is designed to inspire environmental responsibility, build community involvement, and promote sustainability within Pittsburgh’s hospitality industry.”

This is how Spirit, the popular Lawrenceville bar and event space, describes their new “Rooftop Garden” project. The venue has recently launched a fundraising page on ioby.com for an ambitious Rooftop Garden project.

“It is the natural next step for our unique business at Spirit,” explains the venue on their ioby page.

The popular dance hall opened in 2015 in a former Moose Lodge building located at the bottom of Stanton Avenue.

Over the past three years, Spirit has become an integral part of the Pittsburgh community, hosting local events and live music, as well as simply being a fun spot to grab drinks with friends.  With two stages, Spirit showcases both touring and locally-based musicians and DJs.

Currently, the lodge offers 10,000 square feet of indoor space on two floors. There’s also the “slice island” pizza shop, and a back patio complete with a renovated school bus lounge.

The Rooftop Garden project will add an additional 5,000 square of space to the venue. Plans for the roof include solar panels, a green space, an event space and educational area. The project will also further insulate the building, providing better energy efficiency and dampen noise levels from the building.

Sustainability efforts from the project include a decrease local stormwater runoff and pollution, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and increased access to urban agriculture.

Fundraising is currently underway for Phase 1 of the project. Phase 2 will include planter beds, a rainwater catchment & water irrigation system, and the arrival of the bees.
