A popular Pittsburgh food truck has just set up their very own brick-and-mortar.
Steve and Benny’s Chicken Shack is officially open in Monaca, serving a menu that centers around fried chicken sandwiches, but also features Creole and Southern-inspired dishes and sides.
Owners Stephen Gates and Ben Dougherty launched the Steve and Benny’s food truck last year, after spending years operating trucks in Pittsburgh (Doughtery at Pittsburgh Po’Boy, and Gates at Parrot Bay Café). After finding a successful following with the concept, they decided to expand the business to Beaver County.
“With our food trucks, we both used to go to Monaca for food truck roundups and social events,” Gates says. “And the people there were just so accommodating and supportive of us, and other small businesses, that we just felt like this would be a great place to have our business.”
In addition to their popular fried chicken sandwiches (which come with two fried chicken breasts), Steve and Benny’s also serves chicken nuggets, salad, Mac & Cheese, Cole Slaw and fresh-cut fries, plus a selection of rotating specials, like Jambalaya and Gumbo.
“The food is really all inspired by Ben,” says Gates. “He had the concept of making good, homemade fried chicken sandwiches, and everything from scratch, and it grew from there.”
They also offer a selection of Rice Krispie treats, with different flavors each week, like Oreo and Cap’n Crunch.
For now, the restaurant is open for takeout-only in accordance with current Pennsylvania guidelines, though eventually, Gates says, there will be seats for 35-40.
And while opening in the midst of a pandemic has had its challenges, Gates says that their plans were only delayed slightly, but not majorly altered.
“We’ve been on a hiatus just because of everything that’s been going on, but me and my business partner just decided that there wasn’t going to be a better time to open than now,” Gates says. “We really just had to keep moving forward with our plans.”
The restaurant is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This Saturday, December 19, they’ll be hosting their official grand opening with Recon Brewing, serving up beers to go.
Orders for pickup can be made by calling the shop at 878-207-2627, and Gates says that they will soon be offering delivery through DoorDash and GrubHub.
