Fridays are for the fish in Pittsburgh during Lent, and if you’re not planning to make it to a church fish fry this week (you can find the official Pittsburgh Fish Fry Map here), there are plenty of fish-related restaurant specials to enjoy throughout the season.
Alta Via Pizzeria
Every Friday through March 29, Alta Via Pizzeria in Bakery Square is serving up their own fish sandwich special, made with panko-breaded cod, fennel slaw and Calabrian aioli, all on a potato bun, and served with fries or a side salad. Oak Hill Post
Fish Fry season is always special at Oak Hill Post in Brookline, because they bring back their much-anticipated No Cods No Masters fish sandwich special. Available every day throughout Lent, the sandwich comes with breaded freshwater pike, shredded lettuce, pickles, American cheese, and Old Bay remoulade – all served on a house-made biscuit. Bitter Ends and Brothmonger
If you’re looking for a fish fry experience that will combine two of Pittsburgh’s very best independent chefs – you’ve come to the right place. Becca Hegarty of Bitter Ends and Sarah McAlee of Brothmonger are teaming up for weekly pop-ups during Lent at Linea Verde Green Market in Bloomfield. This Friday, find them for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., serving up black bean soup, roasted red pepper bisque, and anchovy melts, and for dinner from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., they’ll have clam chowder, haluski and cole slaw from Sausalido Catering & Bistro, and an absolutely incredible fried cod sandwich. Pittsburgh Sandwich Society
Every Friday during Lent, Pittsburgh Sandwich Society is serving up their Big McClownFish sandwich, a monster bite with two cod filets, American cheese, chopped white onion, shredded lettuce, pickles, and their own Mac sauce, in a triple-decker bun. Catatouille
Vegan non-profit food truck Catatouille is hosting a weekly Fishless Fry every Friday during Lent, serving up vegan “fish” sandwiches, fries, homemade pierogies, coleslaw, vegan cheese sticks, and desserts. They’ll be located on Fridays from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at 106 E. Swissvale Avenue, in front of Rescue and Relax cat lounge. Food and drink will be donation-based (with suggested pricing), and the space has a large seating area, draft beer, and cider. Proceeds will benefit the Rescue and Relax cat shelter.
Moonlit Burgers
The unbelievable Moonfry Fish Sandwich from Moonlit Burgers is available at both their uptown and Dormont locations every Friday throughout Lent. Made with panko-fried cod, this ‘wich is topped with Moonlit’s own remoulade, their signature Moon sauce, lettuce, tomato, and pickles, all on a Martin’s potato roll. Find it uptown from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and in Dormont from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Moonlit Burgers
Wild Rise Bakery
Treat yourself to a gluten-free ‘fish’ fry this Friday from Wild Rise Bakery. The bakery is offering two versions of their special Lenten sandwich this seasons: A Caribbean-style fried catfish option, and a fried oyster mushroom sandwich (or, combine to two for the ‘Chef’s Kiss’ option). Each sandwich is $15, and come with a house-made sesame seed bun, house-made vegan slaw, and a side of Trinidadian pepper sauce and pickles. Order online for pickup at their Point Breeze bakery. Coop De Ville
Fish Fry Fridays are now on at Coop De Ville, featuring their fresh fried fish sandwiches, topped with slaw. It’s available throughout Lent, along with their fried fish platter, served with crinkle-cut fries. Coop De Ville (2305 Smallman Street)
Mediterra Café
Available at all Mediterra Café locations during Lent on Fridays, Mediterra’s fish sandwich is made with Icelandic cod, fresh cabbage slaw, and tartar sauce, served on a house-made challah bun. Available while supplies last. Mediterra Café
Forma Pasta
Forma Pasta in Sewickley has two fish specials this Lenten season: A fish sandwich, made with fried cod and a buttered hoagie roll, topped with slaw, greens and tartar sauce, and a ‘Big Fish’ platter, piled high with fried fish, fries, salad, slaw, and pickles. Local Provisions
For Fish ‘Frydays’ during Lent, Local Provisions is serving up a Yuengling-battered cod sandwich, topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and tartar sauce on a Mediterra sub roll. Shubrew
Shubrew’s Fish Special sammie is made with fresh, hand-breaded blue catfish, and topped with Nashville hot oil, caper-dill tartar sauce, house pickles and red cabbage. Each sandwich is $15, and comes with a side. They also have a cod fish and chips dish made with house malt vinegar available, too. Shubrew (205 S. Main Street, Zelienople)
Sally Ann’s
Honey-battered fried fish sandwiches, fresh slaw, and tartar sauce are on the menu on Fridays during Lent at Sally Ann’s downtown. The restaurant also has a fried fish platter special available throughout the season. Sally Ann’s (136 6th Street)
Burgatory
Available every Friday during Lent, Burgatory’s Great Cod Almighty sandiwches are made with beer-battered cod, apple and bleu cheese slaw, and topped with a tomato, iceberg lettuce, and honey habanero sauce. Burgatory (multiple locations)
Khalil’s
Khalil’s has a new Lenten lunch special every Friday throughout the season: Aleppo red pepper fried fish sandwiches, with za’atar steak fries, cole slaw, sumac onions, shatta hot sauce, and tartar sauce. They also have a Mediterranean sauteed shrimp special with lemon garlic sauce, and fried Branzino with vanilla-pickled fennel for dinner. Khalil’s (4757 Baum Blvd.)
Dorido’s
Since 1966, Dorido’s in South Park has been serving one of Pittsburgh’s favorite fish sandwiches. On Fridays during Lent, you’ll often find the line out the door – but it’s worth the wait, because this (massive) sandwich is a good one. Luckily for all of us, it’s available year-round. The Pub Chip Shop
Though you can get The Pub Chip Shop’s Fish Bap sandwiches year-round, they just hit differently during Lent. The South Side staple’s fish sandwich is made with beer-battered haddock and topped with tartar sauce, on a fresh-baked sandwich roll. Fish and chips platters are also available. Eat’n Park
Pittsburgh institution Eat’n Park has been serving their beloved fish sandwich special, The Whale of a Cod, for 75 years. It’s made with hand-breaded cod, and served on a fresh Cellone’s roll, with your choice of their available sides. Other seafood options include Baked Cod, Nantucket Cod, and their Tuna Melt special.
