As we enter the last unofficial week of summer, we’re reflecting on all of the delicious dishes that we had this season. From hanger steak and creamed corn at Root 174 toJapanese Wagyu Kushiyaki beef at Fukuda, we got to enjoy an amazing array of culinary delights. In this edition of The 5 Spot, we’re featuring our five favorite dishes of the summer… and maybe for the rest of the year, too.
Ricotta Doughnuts at Sienna Mercato: After the meatballs, after the pizza, and after the fried pickles (which deserve their own spot on this list), you must have Sienna Mercato’s Ricotta Doughnuts. They’re soft and warm, and, for a doughnut, not too doughy. Topped with powdered sugar (or chocolate sauce, if you’re really going all out), it’s a dessert worth its weight in gold.
Bicycle Times BLT at OTB Bicycle Café: Oh, how we love this BLT. Piled high with crispy bacon, it’s a classic BLT with a twist – an addition of Pepperjack cheese, avocado, and a fried egg. It’s topped with chipotle mayo, and served on a (pretty amazing) Breadworks bun. And it’s one of our favorite sandwiches in a sandwich-rich town.
Hot Dogs at Shorty’s: Travel south to this Washington, PA landmark, and enjoy the best hot dogs that you can find within 50 miles of Pittsburgh – and in about 5 minutes or less. These are classic dogs, but when they’re topped with chili, onions and mustard (the works), it’s a little taste of heaven. And don’t even think about making a visit without ordering gravy fries. The best part? In all of the years that we’ve been going there, (and no matter how much food we order), we’ve never had a bill more than $20.
Pera Mula cocktail at Harvard& Highland: Summer begs for crisp cocktails, and that’s why right now we’re loving cocktails made with ginger beer. Luckily, Harvard & Highland has one of the best in the city right now. The Pera Mula is a refreshing cocktail made with Mezcal, prickly pear extract, ginger beer, and lemon, and it’s the perfect drink to toast the end of the season.
Happy Camper Cupcake at Oakmont Bakery: We’re big fans of Oakmont Bakery (and pairing cocktails with their delicious creations), and we’ve been calling back memories of summer campfires with their Happy Camper Cupcake. A fudgey chocolate cupcake, paired with fluffy marshmallow filling, and topped with chocolate ganache, a chocolate candy bar, graham cracker crumbs and a miniature marshmallow, it’s the closest thing you’ll find to a s’more, without adding flames.
